And shall declare Your mighty acts."
Psalm 145:4 NKJV
I don’t make lefsa much anymore, but I well remember making it often with my mother, and in my mind’s eye, I can still see my grandmother making it on her wood-burning cook stove in her farmhouse kitchen in the back woods of Minnesota. But this past holiday season, it came alive once again in my very own kitchen as Jackson, Janelle and I made enough lefsa for an army, having a wonderful afternoon sharing stories of our family from the past as we worked.
As we did so I was reminded of the importance of passing things onto the next generation, and I couldn’t help but wonder how many valuable traditions and stories drop through the cracks because we fail to pass them on. Just this week I was reminded of that again when in reading the book of Isaiah, I came to the words of God when He told the prophet Isaiah to “Preserve the teaching of God; entrust his instructions to those who follow me.” Isaiah 8:16 NLT This also made me think of Moses’ instructions when he said to talk about God’s commands when you’re home, when you go out-and-about, when you go to bed at night and when you get up in the morning. Deuteronomy 6:7
You see, if we don’t pass God’s truth onto the next generation, it could be one of those things that falls through the cracks and soon forgotten. I can't help but wonder if that is already happening in our culture. I don't know about you, but I don’t want that to happen on my watch.
I’m so glad I have a grandson who holds me to the task!
Love and Blessings,
Judy Rose Grubaugh
P.S. At my mom’s 100th birthday party three years ago, one of the events planned by my niece, Sara, for the family was a lefsa making party! It’s one of the final memories I have of my dear mom. She truly was the queen of the lefsa maker!
