“…keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come.”
Matthew 24:42
Matthew 24:42
The other day I was waiting at a red light, ready to make a left turn at a busy intersection when right in front of me in the crosswalk passed a woman walking very slowly while talking on her phone and looking at the ground. She was totally oblivious to what was going on around her. Now I grant she had the right-of-way, however, I couldn’t help but think for her own safety’s sake, she had some responsibility to keep herself aware of her surroundings. What if a car had run a red light? Or, if a car had jumped the gun when the light changed? She could so easily have been run down. Oh yes, it wouldn’t have been her fault, but at that point what would it have mattered?
As I was sitting there in my car waiting for the light to change, it occurred to me that she was a picture of our world in general. We live as if we have the right-of-way, totally oblivious to what is going on round about us. We live as if it’s our right to live, totally oblivious to the fact that God is the giver of life and breath. And we live as if life will go on forever. We seem oblivious to the fact that one day Jesus will come, and life—as we know it—will suddenly come to an end.
When the light finally changed, and that woman was safely on the sidewalk, I made my left turn realizing that what I had just witnessed was a living picture of what Jesus talked about one day on the mountain when He told a few men to watch for His coming and to order their lives accordingly. He told them not to be like the people of Noah’s day who lived as if there was no tomorrow and didn’t even know what hit them until the flood came and it was too late.
The interesting thing is, His message wasn’t just for those few close friends, it’s for you and me as well. Are you ready to meet Jesus? Are you watching for His coming? Or, like the woman in the crosswalk, are you oblivious to it all?
For your own safety’s sake, “keep watch.”
