One of my favorite things to do is walk along the beach, especially on the central coast of California where there is much more wide-open space than here in the southern part of our state. Last week my husband and I had the pleasure of doing just that. The weather was perfect—comfortably warm. The sky was glorious, and the fragrance of the beach air was a balm to my spirit. As we leisurely strolled away from the crowds and the hustle and bustle of life, the scene stretched out before us appeared as if it had been swept clean of everything but its natural beauty. And hearing the sound of the crashing waves and seeing the sun glisten down upon the water only added to the serenity of our surroundings.
But suddenly and seemingly out of nowhere a homemade sign popped out in front of us that read: Leave Footprints not Trash. At first I sighed, as I realized that even on that beautiful beach, there is a trash problem. But as I continued looking at the sign, suddenly I felt that tender nudge of God giving me a message about life, for deep within my heart He was asking me what I am leaving behind. Is it footprints or trash? The message was so real that I grabbed my Smartphone and snapped a photo, and as we walked along I spoke my thoughts out loud to my husband. And then together, we asked the questions: What are we leaving behind? What will be our legacy? Are our footprints worth following, or one day when we’re gone, will our lives be picked up, thrown away and forgotten? Just like trash. Or, are we leaving footprints worth following?
What about you? What will it be? Footprints or trash?
