" I heard the voice of the Lord saying, 'Whom shall I send?
And who will go for us?' And I said, 'Here am I. Send me!'"
Isaiah 6:8
And who will go for us?' And I said, 'Here am I. Send me!'"
Isaiah 6:8
A few months ago, back in October, along with six other women, I attended a conference in North Carolina, but first, we enjoyed a girls weekend at the home of a dear friend who had recently moved there. We came and went, enjoying a number of fun activities, one of which scared me silly. It’s called, a Segway. You know, one of those “two-wheeled motorized personal vehicles…controlled by ones weight.” You occasionally see police officers riding them or even daring teenagers. But me? How in the world was I going to psych myself up to get on that thing, much less ride it around the city of Charlotte? Secretly, I was hoping we’d get delayed long enough at the Billy Graham Library so we’d have to cancel. But, that didn’t happen.
It got only worse when we appeared at the rental agency, for right away each of us was presented with a many-paged document requiring multiple signatures. Then, we had to sit down and watch a video of the dangers of riding such a vehicle, not to mention our responsibility if we wrecked it. It didn’t take long for us to realize we had probably signed our lives away along with the strong possibility of breaking our necks. This was entirely out of my comfort zone!
Nonetheless, after donning helmets, our training began on a busy city street. One-by-one, our guide took us on a trial run. When my turn came I looked around at my friends and determined they were as nervous as me. So, I took the plunge. The only way around this, I knew, was to stare fear in the face and do it. Who cared if I was the oldest one among them? I put my thinking cap on, paying careful attention to the guide’s instructions and would you believe, after a few trial runs, it was fun. I could do it! And, you know what? I’d do it again.
All of this came to mind these past few weeks as I’ve been preparing to lead a study of the book of Isaiah in a Bible study with the women of our church. After reading it through over the holidays and getting lost multiple times, I began to wonder where my head was when I committed to do this. It’s totally out of my comfort zone! But then I remembered the segway ride and how much I would have missed had I not gone through with it.
Tomorrow we begin, and even though I’m not fully comfortable, I am excited and eager to get started. I’m staring fear in the face, confident God will see us through. After all, He promises to reveal His secrets to those who truly want to know Him. Psalm 25:14
By the way, next time anyone wants to go segway riding, I’m in!
Love and blessings,
